• A motor vehicle except for headlights is also equipped with auxiliary lamps, a spot lamp, or any other lamp in front of the vehicle projecting a beam of intensity greater than three hundred (3,770 lumen) power.
  • A lighting device mounted on the rear of a vehicle must be of red color, except as follows: the stop light or other signal devices may be red, amber, or yellow; a backup light must be white or amber, the license plate light must be white.
  • In addition to at least headlights and one tail light, a vehicle in Indiana is allowed may be equipped with not more than one auxiliary driving lamp, one auxiliary passing lamp, and two spot lights. The number of fog lights is maximum two.

    IC 9-19-6-3.  Sec. 3.  Number, location, and height of head lamps.

    (a) A motor vehicle other than a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle must be equipped with at least two (2) head lamps, with at least one (1) of the head lamps on each side of the front of the motor vehicle. The head lamps must comply with this chapter.

    (b) Except as provided in subsection (c), a motorcycle and motor-driven cycle must be equipped with at least one (1) and not more than two (2) head lamps that comply with this chapter.

    A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than two (2) spot lamps. A lighted spot lamp must be aimed and used when approaching another vehicle so that no part of the high intensity part of the beam will be directed to the left of the prolongation of the extreme left side of the vehicle or more than one hundred (100) feet ahead of the vehicle.

    Sec. 16.  Auxiliary driving lamps.

    A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than one (1) auxiliary driving lamp mounted on the front at a height not less than sixteen (16) inches and not more than forty-two (42) inches above the level surface upon which the vehicle stands. Section 20 of this chapter applies to any combination of head lamps and auxiliary driving lamp.

    SIC 9-19-6-22.  Sec. 22.  Motorcycles; head lamps.

    (a) The head lamp or head lamps upon a motor-driven cycle may be of the single-beam or multiple-beam type.

    (b) A head lamp on a motor-driven cycle must be of sufficient intensity to reveal a person or a vehicle at a distance of not less than:

    1) one hundred (100) feet when the motor-driven cycle is operated at a speed of less than twenty-five (25) miles per hour;

    2) two hundred (200) feet when the motor-driven cycle is operated at a speed of at least twenty-five (25) miles per hour; and

    3) three hundred (300) feet when the motor-driven cycle is operated at a speed of at least thirty-five (35) miles per hour.

    A lighting device and reflector mounted on the rear of a vehicle must display or reflect a red color, except as follows:

    1) The stoplight or other signal device may be red, amber, or yellow.

    2) The light illuminating the license plate must be white.

    3) The light emitted by a back-up lamp must be white or amber.

    Sec. 21.

    Head lamps arranged to provide a single distribution of light are permitted on motor vehicles manufactured and sold before March 9, 1956, instead of the multiple-beam road-lighting equipment specified in this chapter, if the single distribution of light meets the following requirements:

    1) The head lamps must be aimed so that when the vehicle is not loaded none of the high-intensity part of the light will:

    (A) at a distance of twenty-five (25) feet ahead, project higher than a level of five (5) inches below the level of the center of the lamp from which light comes; and

    (B) at a distance of seventy-five (75) feet ahead.
